3 Healthy and Natural Energy Boosters

by Punctual Abstract

Don’t reach for that energy drink. Don’t opt for that frozen, sugar-loaded coffee concoction. There are healthy ways to beat the 3 pm slump, and we’re serving them up here at the Punctual Abstract Corporate Wellness blog.

Without further ado, here are three healthy energy boosters!

Send Fatigue Packing with these Healthy Energy Boosters

1. Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha, an herb that has been used for over 3,000 years across the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Africa, India and Pakistan, is simply amazing. It’s efficacy as a powerful herbal medicine, like ginseng, has recently been verified by modern science.

Ashwagandha has been shown to reduce stress, improve endurance and muscle strength gains from exercise, and even reduce food cravings and assist in body weight management. Ashwagandha can be found as a tea in your local supermarket.

2. Ginseng

The energy-boosting properties of ginseng, long used in traditional Chinese medicine for focus and alertness, has recently received the backing of hard science.

A Mayo Clinic-led, randomized double-blind study found that cancer patients taking doses of American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) for eight weeks experienced a significant reduction in exhaustion and fatigue compared to placebo.

Ginseng is sold commonly in supermarkets as a tea or in health food and supplement stores in pill and powder form.

3. Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential mineral, necessary for no fewer than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. Most important for our purposes, and what makes it among the best healthy energy boosters out there, is how it helps break down glucose (sugar) into energy.

If you don’t have enough magnesium in your diet— 300 milligrams daily for women and 350 milligrams daily for men—your body will have to work harder than it should to create energy. Over time, this leaves you feeling exhausted and depleted.

Fish and whole grains are a great source of magnesium, as are nuts. The easy way to ensure you’re getting enough magnesium is to add a generous handful of almonds, hazelnuts or cashews to your daily diet.
